Statement of Bishop Michael Fisher on the Death of Pope Francis (2025)

Posted: April 29, 2025

With heavy hearts and profound gratitude, we commend to our loving and one true God the soul of Pope Francis, the good and faithful “Servant of Servants” who guided our Universal Church and the Catholic faithful these past 12 years. Pope Francis’ example of humility and simplicity, his constant call to seek peace, and his openness to all will forever remind us of our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, whom he mirrored in spirit and throughout his long and devoted life as a faithful layman, priest, bishop and pontiff.

In this, the Jubilee Year that the Holy Father inaugurated, may we honor Pope Francis and indeed be true ‘Pilgrims of Hope’ on our pilgrimage toward renewal and reconciliation. May we be constantly inspired by his pursuit of holiness, his warmth, humor, keen insights into the mysteries and traditions of our faith, and most especially, by his love for all without scorn and judgment.

We also humbly appeal to the Holy Spirit to now guide the cardinals of our church as they prepare to select the successor to Pope Francis. May their only motive be to choose one among them who is possessed with great holiness, compassion, wisdom and courage, and best suited to now lead our Church forward in this complex and difficult age.

Eternal rest grant unto your servant Francis, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace.

Easter Greetings! (2025)

Posted: April 25, 2025

As we begin our annual Easter celebration today, we hope that you are renewed in the faith, hope and joy that the victory of Jesus Christ over sin and death and the promise of resurrection helps to dispel the fear and darkness of loneliness and despair that may be surrounding you at this time. Easter celebrates the central mystery of our faith – not only the promise of life eternal with Christ in the Kingdom of Heaven — but also the promise that in the midst of the suffering we endure under the crosses we bear in this life; we can rely on His power to be able to carry them and overcome them. Each year, on this day, as I hear the gospel account of the disciples at the empty tomb, I think of the remarkable faith they possessed to look into the darkness and see hope and joy. May we all have the faith to see the light and hope of the risen Jesus in the midst of the dark times of our life.

I would like to thank all of the people who helped to make our celebrations of the Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter) such a beautiful expression of our faith – those who decorated the worship sites, those who ministered as ushers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, altar servers and music ministers. So many people play a role in our worship and liturgies throughout the year, but especially during the seasons of Advent and Christmas and Lent and Easter. Thank you for all you do for our Cattaraugus Creek Catholic Community! On behalf of all of us, may the blessing of the Risen Christ be with you today, throughout the Easter Season and forever!

Happy Easter!

Pontifical Good Friday Collection (2025)

Posted: April 3, 2025

Pope Francis has asked our parish to support the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the Holy Land, where they are now less than 2% of the population.

Your support is essential to help the Church minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools, and offer religious education.

The Pontifical Good Friday Collection also helps to preserve the sacred shrines of Christianity, including Jerusalem, Nazareth and Bethlehem.

The pandemic had hit the Christians in the Holy Land particularly hard. Most of them depend on pilgrimages for work. The war made their situation even more dire. In these times of crisis, the Pontifical Good Friday Collection is necessary to meet the basic needs of the People of God still living in this Land and to maintain a Christian presence where the Church was born.

When you contribute to the Pontifical Good Friday Collection, you join with Catholics around the world in solidarity with the Church of the Holy Land.
