Parish Contributions to the Diocesan Chapter 11 Settlement (June 2025)

Posted: June 26, 2025

After a five-year tumultuous journey, the Catholic Church in Western New York can begin again to see a light forward – a light guiding us to the end of this painful and dark period in our history as Church and toward a future where we may continue to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.

In April, the Diocese of Buffalo announced a settlement in principle with the Official Committee of Unsecured Creditors, which represents hundreds of people victimized by past sexual abuse. To fulfill the Diocese’s $150 million commitment, parishes and Catholic affiliated entities are being asked to join with the diocese to contribute toward the settlement.

Some of you may question why we, as Church are asked to do this. It is exactly that, because we are Church, one, universal, and not parish versus parish. As a faith community, it is our responsibility to help bring justice and healing. Part of this justice, to help soothe the pain, which will never go away, is to provide compensation. By making a meaningful contribution to the settlement, parishes secure protection from claims that have been time-barred, due to a channeling injunction. Put simply, parishes could be protected from current or potential future claims should New York State re-open the statute of limitations in which to bring claims forward. This has happened in other states.

It is important to understand that the money we are being asked to contribute comes from unrestricted reserves and not current offertory. Parish and cemetery assets which are restricted for specific donor directed purposes will not be impacted.

No dollar amount can ever fully compensate victim survivors for their pain. However, this settlement ensures they receive some compensation for the physical, emotional and spiritual scars they still endure. Know that the diocese has worked diligently to ensure that the sins of the past are not repeated today. You can learn more about this by visiting “Protecting God’s Children” on the diocesan website, www.buffalodiocese.org.

This has been a sad chapter in our history as the Catholic Church in Western New York. We cannot erase the past, but there is a way we can emerge again into the light – the light of Christ. Just as Jesus willingly suffered for the good of His people, now we must be willing to sacrifice to ensure we continue our mission of evangelization and our ministries, for ourselves and for future generations.

The parishes of the Cattaraugus Catholic Community are being asked to contribute the following amounts toward the Chapter 11 settlement:

St. Aloysius:  $20,301 (80% of unrestricted assets)
St. John the Baptist:  $143,180 (80% of unrestricted assets)
St. Joseph:  $141,429 (80% of unrestricted assets)
St. Jude:  $63,447 (80% of unrestricted assets)
St. Mary:  $273,762 (45% of unrestricted assets)

Due to St. Mary’s continuing as a parish, they are assessed at a different percentage than the parishes which have been or are expected to be merged into St. Mary’s. Copies of “Frequently Asked Questions” regarding the parish contributions to the settlement are available at the doors of the worship sites, on the websites – staloy.com and saintmaryarcade.org – and by contacting the family office or the family business office.

Seeking to Serve? (2025)

Liturgical Ministries: Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors, Altar Servers, Ushers, Music Ministers

One of the best things that came out of Vatican II was the realization that, as all of us make up the Church, the Body of Christ, it is all of our responsibility to actively participate in the Mass.

Due to the changes in Mass Times that were made because of the right sizing/restructuring on the Road to Renewal, we understand many who may have participated at Mass may be looking to continue during another Mass Time or even at a different Church within our Family.

We would like to invite those members of our Cattaraugus Creek Catholic Community Family who were Ministers at other Mass Times to participate in the new schedule.

If you are interested or have any questions, I invite you to contact me.

I hope many of you feel a call to actively serve our ever-growing Eucharistic community boldly serving others through God’s love!

Please contact the St. Aloysius Family Office at 716-592-2701 ext. 210 or email ccccsecretary@roadrunner.com

How to Publish Information in Bulletin (2025)

Posted: May 24, 2025

If you want to place information in the bulletin, it must be sent to the bulletin email address on the front of the bulletin 14 days in advance of the date you want it published.

For example, something for July 6th would need to be sent by June 22.

If you can send anything earlier, it helps me determine what we will have room for.

During Advent and Lent, information is due a full month before publication because of LPI’s limited hours.

For a name to be placed on the prayer intentions for the sick, it must be requested by the individual or a family member of that person, no exceptions. We appreciate your understanding since some people do not wish their names to be shared publicly.

Help Diocese Plan March for Life (2025-2026)

Posted: May 24, 2025

Help Us Plan for the March for Life 2026!

The Respect Life Office is excited to begin preparing for the next March for Life in January 2026 – and we need your input.

The Diocese of Buffalo joins hundreds of thousands of Catholics and others in Washington, D.C., participating in a peaceful march of public witness and prayer.

Traditionally we have traveled together by bus, attended the evening Vigil Mass at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, and marched the next day to the Supreme Court Building.

Whether you’ve joined us before or have never attended the March, we want to hear from you!

Your feedback will help us shape our plans and make the trip meaningful, accessible, and well organized for everyone.

Please take a few minutes to complete our short survey at: buffalodiocese.org/respect-life

For questions or more information, contact the Respect Life Office (please see bulletin of May 25, 2025 for specific contact info).
